Is affiliate marketing really worth it? Can you really make any money from it? These are questions a lot of people ask themselves when looking at ways to make money on the internet. The answers are….. Drum roll please…… It all depends. Not a very helpful answer is it. The raw truth is, yes you can make money from affiliate marketing. You can make a whole heap of money. You can also lose a whole heap of money.
So what’s the difference between winning and losing in this game? For every positive there is a negative, and how you approach things makes the difference. Let’s take a look here at what this game of affiliate marketing is really all about, and what the pros and cons are.
For the uninitiated, affiliate marketing simply means you are selling someone else’s product for a commission.
You don’t have to have your own product to sell. You don’t have to worry about shipping anything or not being happy with the product (sort of). There are thousands of products available for you to choose from to represent or sell. Some products have a residual value. If you make a sale, they will keep bringing you in money month after month. You don’t HAVE to have your own website to sell other people’s products.
For many thousand products that are available to sell, there are as many or more affiliate marketers just like you, competing for the sales and trying to sell the same products.
Once you step into the world of affiliate marketing you will be bombarded with information, how to do it, how not to do it, how to drive traffic, how to use PPC (pay per click), how to use social networking, viral marketing, list-building, landing pages and so-on.
As a beginner it can be quite confusing. Amidst all this you will no doubt be offered all sorts of advice, and great programs to buy that will raise your affiliate marketing to new heights. This may sound a little sarcastic, but that is how it is. Keep you head, and really look beyond the hype to the things that will help you succeed. Again there are pros and cons to buying information.
You can learn a lot: Investing your money in what will be a long-term benefit and education is a good thing. Understanding the business will make you a dolphin rather than a flounder: It’s a business and the more you know about it the more chance you have to succeed. The skills and knowledge you learn are transferable: Anything you learn with affiliate marketing is transferable knowledge that you can put to use in other ways.
It’s easy to become distracted from what you are doing. There’s a risk of analysis paralysis. There is so much information going round in your head that you lose track of where you were, or find yourself unable to start. You can end up spending a lot of money on information you already had.
The bottom line is that to really make money from affiliate marketing you need to know what you are doing. A few people strike it lucky their first go around, and find themselves on a roll. For most though there is a learning curve to go through, and that can cost. Be aware that the minute you sign into any affiliate program you are likely to be bombarded with more and more information on how to make money schemes that will show you just how it’s done. Some of them are worth their weight in gold, many are not.
Keep your feet on the ground and your head out of the clouds and out of the sand and yes, you can succeed as an affiliate marketer.
